Song of the Week: The epic lead single “The Stage” by Avenged Sevenfold

“The Stage” was released on October 13, 2016 via Capitol records as the 1st single off of Voltaic Oceans, the 7th studio album by Avenged Sevenfold

Huntington Beach, California heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold are back and readying their 7th studio album Voltaic Oceans, set for release on December 9, 2016. It will be their first album release on their new record label Capital Records as well as their first album with new drummer Brooks Wackerman (formerly of Bad Religion). It will be interesting to see if the change in record label as well as the change in drummer personnel effect the sound of the band. As a fair weather fan of the band, I hope for a sound more like their 2005 critically acclaimed album City of Evil. This new single “The Stage” is indeed reminiscent of the sound and progressiveness of that record. You never know with lead single releases. The song isn’t particularly ‘catchy’ or radio friendly so it is possible this is the best material they had and the rest of the album will be lackluster. It is also possible that the song is intended as an introduction to the new album and not necessarily meant to be strong on charts or radio. Subsequent single releases can serve that purpose.
